The Trap of Goethe
The Trap of Goethe: An Approach to Lighting in Contemporary Theatre
Libros del Rojas, University of Buenos Aires, 2002
From Lighting Design to a Dramaturgy of Lighting
The dramaturgy of lighting seeks to incorporate the different visual arts into theatrical practice without regard for traditional divisions. To achieve this, it is essential above all to redefine relationships such as space–narration and light–word in order to create new parameters for collaborative work.
These new parameters include a new way of engaging in dialogue with both the director and the text, through which the spectator may ultimately be incorporated not only as the receiver of a semiotic system but also as the protagonist of the work.
It further demands the work of all participants in the performance, as well as intervention in and knowledge of the entire process as a whole. It enables new forms of analysis that, over time, will be assimilated into the critical body involved in the construction of a work.
